These spectacular pictures show the exact moment a Kingfisher dives underwater with its dagger-like bill to catch its prey.

The crystal clear shots are the handiwork of UK photographer, Vince Burton, who has spent a year visiting a stretch of river close to his Norfolk home in a bid to take the perfect picture.

Incredibly, patience finally paid off for the 44-year-old who managed to capture the precise moment the majestic bird snapped up a tiny fish before quickly flying away.

Mr Burton said: ‘It has taken me years to find a good habitat with Kingfishers visiting regularly enough to complete this project.

‘The project was part of a year long assignment to study and watch this majestic and beautiful bird.

‘I wanted to photograph a variety of behaviour and this was the holy grail.

‘A shot of the Kingfisher doing what it does best, diving underwater for fish.

‘The key to achieving the shot is finding a spot where they fish regularly as you need plenty of attempts before you get it right.

‘This shot is not at all easy. It takes weeks to set up and even then nothing is guaranteed. Patience and practice are always the key.’

Kingfishers, known for their striking bright blue and orange feathers, are found across the UK but particularly in central and southern England.

The amber listed bird is typically found by still or slow flowing water such as lakes, canals and rivers in lowland areas.
