Kirsten Dunst confesses she avoided Benedict Cumberbatch on the set of new film The Power Of The Dog

‘I can’t talk to you!’: Kirsten Dunst reveals she avoided Benedict Cumberbatch on the set of The Power Of The Dog as he stayed in character as menacing rancher

Kirsten Dunst has admitted that she ‘isolated’ herself from Benedict Cumberbatch on the set of their new film The Power Of The Dog.

The actress, 39, stars in the new Western alongside the actor, which lands on Netflix next month.

It tells the story of a charismatic rancher named Phil Burbank (played by Benedict) who inspires fear and awe in those around him – and due to Benedict largely staying in character as the menacing Phil – Kirsten kept her distance.

When his brother brings home a new wife (played by Kirsten) and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.

In a new interview with Radio Times, Kirsten said: ‘I isolated myself from Benedict.

‘We didn’t talk at all during the filming unless we were out to dinner on a weekend, all together, or playing with our kids.’

However she also added: ‘He’s so sweet. And he’s so British. Polite British, you know? I was like, ‘I can’t talk to you!”

Co-star Jesse Plemons who played George Burbank said: ‘Jane (Campion – the director) organised various exercises and she sent us on a ‘brothers’ hike in New Zealand.’

Benedict also opened up about their relationship to NME, saying: ‘I didn’t want to be really mean to Kirsten, but I needed to stay in character.’

‘So I didn’t speak to her on-set. She was the same.’

‘We were the negative to each other’s positive. [We were] repelled by each other.’

It comes after Kirsten revealed last week that there was an ‘extreme’ between her and her Spider-Man co-star Tobey Maguire.

The Bring It On star discussed the inequity in a new interview with The Independent, telling the publication: ‘The pay disparity between me and Spider-Man was very extreme.’

‘I didn’t even think about it. I was just like, ‘Oh yeah, Tobey [Maguire] is playing Spider-Man.”

‘But you know who was on the cover of the second Spider-Man poster? Spider-Man and ME.’

But she didn’t rule out a return to the role of Mary Jane ‘MJ’ Watson, telling Variety: ‘I would do it.

‘Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that.

‘I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.’
