- One pensioner asked: ‘How am I going to afford these items’
Kmart has ditched its independent living range across the country prompting backlash from Australians struggling with mobility issues.
The retail giant removed the entire section from its online stores and shops due to the products – which included wheelchairs and mobility walkers – not being in ‘demand’.
But a pensioner lashed out at the store in the wake of the move saying she was worried about ‘how I’m going to afford these items’.
The store was plugging the products in March last year saying, ‘make everyday life easier with a range of independent living products – all at our famous low prices!’
Its stock included a $169 wheelchair, $15 foldable walking sticks, $89 mobility walkers and $79 shopping trolleys with seats.

Kmart offered wheelchairs at $169 (pictured) while other specialty websites and stores sell them at prices starting from $299 to $325
But no results could be found on its website for these independent living products during a quick search on Saturday.
‘I went onto the Kmart website to purchase some items for my husband who is in hospital and has mobility issues as a result of his illness,’ a pensioner told 7News.
But she could only find a discounted foam cushion at the time.
‘I was pretty upset … and am now worried how I’m going to afford these items for my husband.
‘It makes me angry that Kmart isn’t catering to a whole group of customers who need them.’
Kmart also sold other specialty items including rails and bathroom safety accessories to help those living with disabilities and mobility issues.
The wife said she has friends who have bought walkers and shower seats from Kmart because they were so affordable.

A spokesperson for Kmart confirmed a ‘small number of products’ have been taken away from shops and online stores
Other online brands selling similar products showed Kmart’s pricing was competitive.
Harvey Norman has mobility walkers going from $289 and its cheapest wheelchair retails for $299, while other specialty sites sell them from $325.
A spokesperson for Kmart confirmed to 7News a ‘small number of products’ have been taken away from shops and online stores.
They said there had been no demand for those particular products and spruiked items still available that ‘promote inclusivity, wellbeing and exercise’ for customers of all ages and abilities.
Harvey Norman and Wesfarmers which owns Kmart were contacted for comment by Daily Mail Australia.
