Kmart has launched a stylish rattan sideboard that can be used as a television stand, storage unit or mini-pantry – and Australian customers are buying it in droves.

The $59 piece has been flying off shelves nationwide since it launched mid-June as part of the discount retailer’s new homewares range.

Many shoppers have compared the budget buy to high-end versions costing between $600 to a staggering $2,000.

Made from rattan, a type of palm used in wicker weaving, wood and vinyl, interior designers have been raving about its affordability and showcasing the versatility of the piece by styling it on Instagram.

The sideboard is stocked in stores Australia-wide but is currently unavailable online.

Interiors influencer Samantha, who posts as Kmart Hack Queen, bought the sideboard and two matching $39 rattan side tables which she transformed into a shelving unit and mounted on the wall of her laundry.

She uses both to store detergent and other laundry products.

Samantha said her construction-savvy husband helped her to fix the tables securely to the wall and warned others not just ‘whack these up and hope for the best’ because they need to be bolstered with extra wood to support the weight.

She praised Kmart’s new home decor collection for offering sophisticated designs at a reasonable price.

‘This range is amazing, very stylish, budget-friendly and well made,’ she said in a post on June 22.

Members of home makeover groups on Facebook have also suggested stacking two sideboards on top of each other to create a larger unit.

Perth home decorator Zoe Gilpin called the sideboard a ‘lovely little piece’ that works well in bohemian or earth-inspired houses.
