Kristin Cavallari gives unfiltered take on The Hills reboot with new young cast

Kristin Cavallari, who shot to fame on the original run of The Hills, has given her unfiltered opinion of the upcoming reboot.

Last month it emerged that MTV is developing a show called The Hills: Next Gen with a completely new cast of young people.

While hosting E! News’ Daily Pop, Kristin, 35, called Next Gen ‘a slap in the face’ to older The Hills stars who had returned for the previous revival New Beginnings.

She shared that Next Gen felt like ‘a totally different show,’ saying: ‘If they’re getting an entirely new cast, how are you even going to call it The Hills?’ 

Around the time her spiky remarks went public, Kristin was spotted swinging by the West Hollywood celeb hot spot Craig’s.

The Hills originally ran on MTV from 2006 to 2010 as a spin-off of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, the show that made Kristin a star.

Kristin was a prominent figure in the original cast of The Hills, along with names like Heidi Montag, Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner, Spencer Pratt and Lauren Conrad. 

Several of the original cast members got back together for a sequel series called The Hills: New Beginnings, but Kristin was not a part of that project.

At the time she was already starring on her own standalone reality series Very Cavallari, which ran from 2018 until she decided to end it in 2020.

The Hills: New Beginnings began in 2019 with original cast members like Audrina, Heidi, Spencer and Brody, but was canceled this January after just two seasons.

Four months later news broke that The Hills: Next Gen was in the works, featuring an updated cast of people in their 20s.

Kristin this week expressed her sympathies with Audrina, who had returned for New Beginnings only to see it canceled.

Audrina has revealed that MTV had not apprised her or her New Beginnings co-stars of its plans to make Next Gen before the news went public.

‘That’s definitely a slap in the face,’ Kristin said while guest-hosting the Daily Pop. ‘I would be a little butt hurt about that too.’

However, despite her sympathies for Audrina, Kristin was also able to grasp the reasoning behind doing The Hills with a new cast.

‘We’re older now, we have kids, everyone is a little bit more concerned about their image,’ said Kristin, who is herself a mother of three. 

‘We’re not going around doing what we did in our early 20s. They need a little bit more drama, a little bit more fun. You gotta bring in the young guns for that.’

A report in Deadline also said that Next Gen would have more diversity than the original version of The Hills and would tackle race, identity and class issues.

It emerged in January that The Hills: New Beginnings was being canceled, and that the cast received the news a week before it went public.

One of the issues was allegedly that the original stars of The Hills were unhappy at how manufactured they felt some plotlines were on the revival. 

An insider told TMZ that multiple stars also balked when producers floated the idea of younger cast members being brought into the fold.
