Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving has tweeted an apology for saying ‘f*** Thanksgiving’

Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving has tweeted an apology for saying ‘f*** Thanksgiving’ after losing a basketball game on Wednesday night.

His comments came as he was leaving the court after his team suffered a frustrating 117-109 loss to the New York Knicks.

Irving was wished a ‘happy Thanksgiving’ by a reporter at the game, but the player was quick to snap back that he doesn’t celebrate the holiday.

However after reflecting on his outburst, Irving has since tweeted to say: ‘I spoke w/ frustration after last nights game and spoke words that shouldn’t be in a professional setting no matter what.

‘Meant no disrespect to the Holiday and those who celebrate it respectfully.

I’m grateful for the time We all can share with our families. We are always ONE.’

He told NBC Sports Boston that he doesn’t celebrate the holiday due to his Native American heritage, which is why he took issue with the well-wisher.

Irving, whose mother is a descendant of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, has always been clear about how he embraces his heritage.

The star has previously had the tribe’s logo inked on the back of his neck and was given the name ‘Little Mountain’ during a Lakota naming ceremony last August.

Although Thanksgiving is celebrated across America to mark the beginning of the holidays and celebrate with family, it can be a painful reminder of colonist pilgrims overpowering Native Americans.

However this isn’t the first time he has lambasted the holiday season, he previously noted that he ‘didn’t think of Christmas as a holiday’.

Despite his distaste of Thanksgiving, in previous years Irving has sent out Thanksgiving messages on Twitter, in 2011 during his rookie season he wrote: ‘Happy Thanksgiving!’
