Labor senator Penny Wong goes into self isolation after waking up ‘feeling unwell’

  • Labor’s senate leader Penny Wong is self-isolating in Canberra 
  • In a statement she revealed that she woke up feeling unwell
  • As a result, she will not be attending the senate in Parliament today   
  • If she tests positive, she will be the fourth federal MP diagnosed 

Labor’s senate leader Penny Wong is self-isolating after waking up feeling ill as coronavirus spreads around the country.

‘This morning I woke feeling unwell,’ Senator Wong said in a statement on Monday.

‘Consistent with advice to all Australians, and recognising that my parliamentary colleagues will return to their home states and communities, as a responsible precaution I will self-isolate, pending medical advice.

‘This morning I woke feeling unwell,’ Senator Wong said in a statement on Monday

‘As a result I will not be attending the Senate today.’

If Senator Wong does test positive for coronavirus, she will be the fourth federal politician to be stuck down with the deadly disease.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton became the first when he was diagnosed on 13 March after visiting the US. 

North Queensland LNP senator Susan McDonald and  Liberal senator Andrew Bragg have also tested positive.

Federal parliament is meeting to deal with legislation governing the economic response to the coronavirus pandemic.
