Labour will make students apply for university after they get their A-level results if they win the next general election, it was announced yesterday.
Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said it would be fairer to poor students, who are more likely to get under-ambitious predicted grades.
It would mean students would be able to approach universities with their actual grades after results day.

The move could cause enormous logistical problems for universities, who would need to process hundreds of thousands of applications in a short space of time.
It would also likely mean changing the structure of the academic year, with Freshers’ Week starting later in the autumn.
Mrs Rayner said: ‘Predicted grades are wrong in the vast majority of cases, and disadvantaged students in particular are losing out on opportunities on the basis of those inaccurate predictions. No one should be left out of our education system just because of their background.’
