She made the comments last night on ITV’s Peston programme during a discussion about red line dating issues.
The programme conducted a poll to coincide with the week of Valentine’s Day to ask people which is the most important issue to agree on if you are dating someone.
Most respondents said Brexit but Covid vaccination status was in second place.
Ms Thornberry, who is married with three children, was asked what she would choose and she replied: ‘I wouldn’t go out with someone who wasn’t vaccinated.’
The former shadow international trade secretary was asked what she would say to a date who revealed they were not vaccinated and she joked: ‘Well, first of all I would say I was married.’
She then continued: ‘I’m out. Yeah, really.’
Fellow guest, Bob Seely, the Tory MP for the Isle of Wight, pointed out that someone who is unvaccinated ‘doesn’t have to be a conspiracy theorist’.
But Ms Thornberry replied: ‘I don’t care. It shows him to be selfish, to not care about community, to not have a sense of responsibility.
‘I think that we owe it to others to be vaccinated, not just to ourselves.’
