Beer makers Lagunitas has created an IPA made with extracts of cannabis.

The California-based company debuted its SuperCritical range made from marijuana terpenes, a substance found in the essential oils of plants, last week.

Its brewers then painstakingly tried to match different strains to its own hops to create the perfect flavor.

Only one batch of 60 barrels – around 120 kegs – was produced, and sent to bars across California, the Chicago Tribune reported.

‘There may be more SuperCritical coming in the future, and this time to other areas in the US,’ said Karen Hamilton, Lagunitas’ director of communications.

The terpenes to make the beer are said to have been provided by company which also makes cannabis Vape cartridges known as AbsoluteXtracts.

Its vice president for marketing Kial Long said they tried several terpene blends ‘with the Lagunitas-style taste in mind’.

Lagunitas brewer Jeremy Marshall then selected his favored strain to match with one of their hops.

SuperCritical was made with terpenes which contain no THC, meaning they will not feel the mind altering effects of cannabis – only the alcohol.

Karen Hamilton said the beer was tested extensively in their lab ad ‘no one has experienced any psychotropic effects (to the dismay of some)’.

Lagunitas’ license was suspended by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in 2005 after an employee was caught rolling a joint at a brewery party.

Breweries have tried to mimic the flavor of cannabis before with Lagunitas’ Waldos, DC Brau’s Smells Like Freedom and Oskar Blues’s Pinner Throwback IPA.
