It’s the part of your day that needs little thought, whether you’re a latte drinker or an almond milk cappucino sort who likes their beverage extra hot with a shot of caramel.
But have you ever wondered what your morning coffee order says about your personality?
Melbourne barista, Lachlan Ward, revealed what each coffee type says about you, as well as some of the strangest requests he’s received.
From affable latte lovers to piccolo-drinking perfectionists, here FEMAIL takes a look at what your barista really thinks when you buy your morning brew.

LATTE DRINKERS
With the average Australian spending $494.29 annually on coffees, and the latte being the most popular order, what does it mean if you like your coffees delicious and milky?
‘Latte lovers are generally very approachable and affable people,’ Lachlan told Daily Mail Australia.
‘On the whole, they’re flexible, easy-going and wouldn’t say a bad word about anyone.’
On the flip side, Lachlan added that latte fans can be ‘a bit gullible and a pushover’.
The most basic of coffee drinkers, latte fans are also likely to be keen on other obvious things, like white wine spritzers and Aperol Spritz.
FLAT WHITE DRINKERS
While the latte is by far and away the most popular drink, data in Australia shows that flat whites have been steadily increasing, up by more than 22 per cent since 2015, with cappuccinos and long blacks also increasing in popularity.
‘A typical flat white drinkers is a purist and a traditionalist who appreciates routine in their life,’ Lachlan said.
‘But this also means they might be a bit of a control freak.’
Lachlan said that flat white drinkers like routine and consistency – and drinking a flat white fits with this.
Male drinkers are probably fans of a well-cut white shirt and chinos, while female fans might favour a Breton striped T-shirt and jeans.
‘If you’re a cappuccino drinker, it’s likely you have an obsessive personality,’ Lachlan said – but he also said you will be a considerate type (stock image)
CAPPUCCINO DRINKERS
According to Lachlan, the cappuccino is ‘a good starting point for somebody looking to ease their palette into coffee’.
‘If you’re a cappuccino drinker, it’s likely you have an obsessive personality,’ Lachlan said. But he also said you will be a considerate type.
Thanks to the light dusting of chocolate on the top, the Melbourne barista and General Manager of Sensory Lab also said that cappuccino fans will likely have a sweet tooth and need a sugar hit.
‘If a long black is your go-to, you’re probably last to leave the office and have a strong work ethic,’ Lachlan explained (stock image)
LONG BLACK DRINKERS
It’s the purest way you can drink your coffee.
But what does sipping on a long black say about your nature and your personality?
‘If a long black is your go-to, you’re probably last to leave the office and have a strong work ethic,’ Lachlan explained.
‘In saying that, you’re also most likely stubborn, opinionated and will argue a long black is superior to any coffee with milk.’
Long black drinkers will most likely have minimalist wardrobes and a potential sense of superiority towards their fellow milk-drinking coffee compatriots.
PICCOLO DRINKERS
If you’re always on the run and permanently busy, it’s likely you enjoy drinking piccolo coffees – purely because they are quickly finished off.
‘A piccolo drinker likes all things in small quantities,’ Lachlan said.
‘They’re very a kind-hearted person but could also be hiding a fiery competitiveness.’

INSTANT COFFEE
Last but perhaps not least, the coffee drinkers who receive the most amount of flack from others are those instant coffee fans among us, who simply need to add milk from the fridge.
‘Instant coffee drinkers cop quite a bit of flack for being so, but are actually clever, savvy and know what makes a good coffee flavour,’ Lachlan said.
‘They can probably whip themselves up a killer barista-style coffee at home, while chatting to friends about how much money they save not buying them while out.’
