Leaks claim to reveal ‘XL’ iPhone with 6.5-inch screen

Apple fans will have to wait until September to get their hands on the tech giant’s latest iPhones, but a new set of leaked images may give consumers an early peek at what the devices look like.

The images, posted by notorious Twitter leaker Ben Geskin, show dummy models for what appear to be 6.5-inch and 6.1-inch iPhones.

The dummy models were constructed based on leaked design schematics and could be very similar to what the yet-to-be-released phones actually look like.

Apple fans have to wait until September to get their hands on the tech giant’s latest iPhones, but a new set of leaked images may give consumers an early peek at what the devices look like

Geskin, who has shared images of upcoming Apple handsets in the past, tweeted photos of a 6.1-inch iPhone that closely mirrors the rumored ‘budget model.’

Speculation has been building that Apple will release three new iPhones in the fall – a 5.8-inch model, 6.1-inch iPhone and a super-sized 6.5-inch ‘XL’ version.

According to longtime Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 6.1-inch iPhone would retain many of the features used in the iPhone X, but would likely have a cheaper price tag than the 10th anniversary device.

In the photos, the 6.1-inch model, shown in the color black, can be seen as having a single-lens rear camera.

Keeping with the rumors, the 6.1-inch device features a notch at the top of the display, as well as an edge-to-edge screen.

It’s hard to tell in the photo whether the 6.1-inch phone features an LCD screen or slightly bigger bezels, as reports have suggested it will.

Rumors have also suggested that the 6.1-inch iPhone will have an aluminum band and LCD screen to keep costs down.

There isn’t much new information to be gleaned about the iPhone ‘XL’ from the photos.

The 6.5-inch device, pictured in white, appears to have a dual-lens camera setup like that of the iPhone X.

It also looks to have a notch and an edge-to-edge to display, albeit one that’s slightly larger than the model next to it.

The images come after Geskin recently leaked separate images purportedly showing the glass panels that are to be used in the 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch iPhones.

While expected to feature Apple’s largest screen yet, the iPhone X Plus may still be offered at the same price as the $999 iPhone X.

The 6.1-inch device would be Apple’s cheapest model in the lineup at a price of $799, analysts have suggested.

Meanwhile, the 5.8-inch model would be a mid-range option with a $899 price tag.

Kuo has previously predicted that the 5.8-inch device would keep many of the features used in the iPhone X, but would also have updated components, resulting in the higher price point.

The second-generation iPhone X and the iPhone X Plus/XL would come in black, white and gold, while the 6.1-inch model could come in a variety of colors, including grey, white, blue, red and orange, according to Kuo.

WHAT ARE THE 2018 iPHONE RUMOURS SO FAR?

Apple has yet to unveil the iPhone 8, but the latest rumours of its 2018 smartphone have already hit the web.

In August rumours from the supply chain said the iPhone 9 will be available in two sizes, including one with a massive screen that would be Apple’s biggest yet.

The ‘Plus’ size will reportedly have a 6.46-inch screen and will be sold alongside a smaller 5.85-inch model in a bid to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Note.

The leak came from a source within Samsung Display, the sole OLED supplier for the upcoming iPhones.

The source also said the smaller version was originally going to be a 5.28-inch model but that the firm upped it to 5.85 inches because of growing consumer demand for bigger-screen phones.

A recent Apple leak suggested the firm could cancel the iPhone X.

An analyst says the new model’s disappointing sales could lead to the phone being cancelled – with production stopping as soon as this summer.

This could be the first time Apple has cancelled a phone model since the iPhone 5C in 2014.

Experts believe the lack of interest in the phone is largely due to the notch, which many potential Chinese customers believe removes too much space on the screen.

Now, Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities says Apple will release three new iPhone models including a slightly cheaper 6.1-inch phone without 3D touch.

It could also release an updated iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED screen and a larger 6.5-inch OLED model, potentially called the iPhone X Plus.

The 6.1-inch phone will feature an aluminium frame similar to the iPhone 8 and the display will be an LCD panel instead of OLED, he predicted.

The 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus will have similar specifications as the current design but an OLED display and 4GB of RAM, he predicts.
