Learner motorcyclist cops $77,000 fine after he is caught speeding and police discover his camera

A learner motorcyclist received fines of more than $77,000 after police pulled him over and discovered he filmed himself committing dozens of alleged offences on a GoPro-style camera. 

Police confiscated a 23-year-old driver’s action camera after allegedly spotting him driving at 162km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney on September 11.

Officers then combed through the footage and served the man with 41 further charges – including 14 counts of dangerous driving. 

Vision on the memory card allegedly showed him regularly reaching speeds of more than 200km/h.

The dangerous driving charges alone carry $2,200 fines each for each offence.

The other charges included 15 counts of driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit and three counts of exceeding the limit by more than 30km/h.

The fines for those offences are $2,520 and $935 respectively per charge.

Authorities charged the man with six more traffic offences and one count of breaching public orders potentially related to Covid-19 restrictions.

The final two charges were for offensive behaviour.

In March, another motorcyclist was fined more than $17,000 in similar circumstances after police caught him speeding on a wet road in Maroochydore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Police searched through footage on his helmet camera to find evidence of him riding at 201km/h in a 100km/h zone, as well as 32 other traffic infringements.

He also filmed himself doing wheelies at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone. 

A search of his Maroochydore then found a marijuana ‘grow room’ and eight mature cannabis plants, police said.
