Less than third Australians think NBN internet is good

Australians are less satisfied with their broadband than any other nation, a new poll has revealed.

An Ipsos poll published by Fairfax on Wednesday shows Australia ranks 28 out of 28 countries when it comes to broadband satisfaction.

Only 32 per cent of Australians rated their internet as ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ good – a significant drop from the world average of 56 per cent.

Australia lags behind Italy, who only had 35 per cent of residents declare their broadband good, and Brazil, where 37 per cent of people were satisfied with their connection.

And while Australians may have hesitated to sing the praises of their internet, it was certainly not for lack of opinion.

The poll showed 61 per cent of residents rated their broadband as ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ poor.

The number is an eight per cent increase from last year’s result, where only 53 per cent grumbled about their internet connection.

The poll comes during a particularly bad time for the National Broadband Network roll out.

Last week, a report from the Telecommunications Ombudsman revealed there had been 27,195 complaints about the network over the past financial year.

The cost of the widely criticised NBN roll out has now hit about $49billion, leading Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to admit it was a 'mistake' on Monday

The staggering amount of complaints is an increase of 159.3 per cent from last financial year.

Of those complaints, nearly 9,000 said either their landline or their internet was ‘fully unusable’.

Earlier this year, data compiled by cable.co.uk showed countries including Kenya, Estonia and Thailand all have faster internet speeds than Australia.

Mr Turnbull shifted the blame on to Labor’s decision to establish a separate company for the network.
