And she admitted  she is still haunted by her decision not to report him to the police earlier, leaving him free to kill Milly, 13, and two other women.

She said: ‘He would brag quite often. One time he came home and told me he had raped a disabled girl on the bonnet of a car.

‘I am as guilty as he is. I should have said something.’

Speaking about when they first started going out, she said, ‘You couldn’t have met a nicer person,’ and that ‘He brought me flowers and took me places.’

She added: ‘And he was a good looking man in those days.’

But Bellfield’s evil streak soon emerged and he would subject her to daily beatings. She was too scared to leave him and even stuck by him after he slapped her while she was pregnant with his child.

It was only in 2004, when she spotted Bellfield’s white people carrier on Crimewatch, that she felt able to come forward.

The vehicle appeared in an appeal for witnesses to the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.

After admitting she is still haunted by her decision not to go to the police until it was too late, Ms Collings was comforted by the panel. Kaye Adams said: 'There's only one bad guy in this and it's Levi Bellfield'

Kaye Adams said: ‘There’s only one bad guy in this and it’s Levi Bellfield. You were the victim of horrific abuse.’

Ms Collings said she tries to see herself as a survivor of domestic abuse rather than a victim.
