Lewis Capaldi ‘told off by BBC’ for swearing through his Radio 1 Big Weekend set

Lewis Capaldi couldn’t stop swearing while performing at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Dundee, Scotland on Sunday. 

The singer, 26, delighted fans during his headline show as he belted out some of his most loved tracks.

However, the BBC reportedly told the musician off for the amount of swearing in between songs.

Sharing their reaction on Twitter, one fan wrote: ‘Lewis Capaldi at #BigWeekend is brilliant! BBC telling him to stop swearing. Great to see the set live on Iplayer’

Another said: ‘It’s a shame Lewis Capaldi can’t just sing without all the swearing…’

Before his big performance, fans were left gushing over his and pal Niall Horan’s ‘sweet’ friendship, as the Scottish singer leapt on stage during Niall’s set to give him a hug. 

Lewis Capaldi previously said about the news that he was performing: ‘I’m very excited to be playing in Dundee for Big Weekend, I never managed to get tickets last time so I’m very excited to be able to come along and enjoy it as well as playing.’

The music festival took place in Camperdown Park in Dundee, Scotland with over 80,000 music fans attending the three-day festival over the late May bank holiday weekend.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend was originally set to go to Dundee in 2020 but due to the Covid-19 Pandemic it was unable to go ahead.

On Saturday, The 1975 and The Jonas Brothers headlined, with appearances from ArrDee, Jess Glynne, Joel Corry, Mimi Webb and Tom Grennan.

Meanwhile, FLO, Headie One, Pale Waves, Romy, Rudimental, Self Esteem and The Snuts performed on the Future Sounds stage.

The full line-up for Sunday included Lewis Capaldi, Wet Leg and Niall Horan headlining the main stage.

They were joined on the main stage by chart-toppers such as Anne-Marie, Becky, Nothing But Thieves and Zara Larsson.

On the Radio 1 Future Sounds stage was Arlo Parks, Ashnikko, Cassyette,Cat Burns, Inhaler, RAYE and Sub Focus.

Lewis’ new album has outsold the rest of the official album chart top 20 combined to become the fastest selling album of the year so far.

According to the Official Charts Company, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent surpassed the previous biggest opening week of the year, Ed Sheeran ‘s Subtract and outperformed Capaldi’s 2019 album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.

Lewis’ album totalled an excess of 95,000 chart units, while Capaldi’s previous album had only mounted 89,000 chart units in its first week of release.

Speaking to the Official Charts Company, Capaldi said: ‘What doth profit a man if he gains the world, but loses his soul? A f****** number one album, baby!

‘Thank you very much if you went out there and got the album this week. Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent is Number One on the Official Albums chart.

‘Beautiful stuff! Thank you everybody, I love you so much. Fastest-selling album of the year…it feels good!

‘Thanks very much, guys – I’ll see you out there.

‘Lots of shows, lots of smiles, lots of high fives. It means the world, I love you so much.’

Sitting at number two in the albums chart this week is Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token, which is followed by Def Leppard/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s album Drastic Symphonies.

Ed Sheeran’s newest album Subtract has placed fourth in the albums chart, while Harry’s House by Harry Styles sits fifth.

Capaldi also appears on the singles chart this week, with song Wish You The Best sitting at number three.

David Kushner’s song Daylight, sits at number two on the charts behind the number one single Miracle by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding.

According to the Official Charts Company, Capaldi has claimed the biggest album opening of any week since Taylor Swift released her album Midnights in October 2022.

Upon its release, Midnights immediately broke a string of records and became Spotify’s most streamed album in a single day.

Lewis’ fans broke down in tears on Wednesday as he candidly discussed how his mental health struggles almost ended his career.

Lewis, who was diagnosed with Tourette’s after doctors picked up on his uncontrollable shoulder twitch, also discussed being a Hypochondriac.

Hypochondria causes suffers to feel extreme anxiety about their health, including worrying that are or may become seriously ill.

The Scottish singer said: ‘I’ve always been a hypochondriac. I’ve been obsessed like, if something is wrong with me, I’m like, ‘F**k, I’m dying’.

‘I went to a therapist and she was like, ‘Do you not think that’s got something to do with the fact that your grandmother and your aunt both died when you were like three and four, within a year.’
