On Instagram on Sunday, he penned a lengthy message to his devoted fans and vowed to make a comeback in Japan.

‘To say it’s been a weekend of highs and lows is an understatement,’ he wrote.

‘The car didn’t feel the way it did yesterday, and it’s tough to fight for pole position one day and end like this the next. It’s about how you get back up that matters most.’

‘Thank you always to the team for their hard work and keeping the momentum going. I want to thank the fans too, the ones watching at home and the ones who waited out in the rain with us.’

He finished: ‘We’ll keep our heads down and keep working, keep fighting, and come back stronger in Japan.’
