Liam Payne reveals he took epilepsy drug as a mood stabiliser during his days in One Direction

‘It was touch and go, I was losing the plot’: Liam Payne reveals he took an epilepsy drug as a mood stabiliser and battled alcohol issues during his days in One Direction ‘to keep him stable’

Liam Payne has revealed he took an epilepsy drug to act as a mood stabiliser and also battled with alcohol issues during his days in One Direction.

The singer, 26, explained he took the drug as a way of coping with the ‘erratic highs and lows’ that came with being in the world’s biggest boy band but it would sometimes effect his cognitive function under certain lights.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: ‘I just needed a little bit of help to keep me stable – but under certain lights on stage or during interviews, I wouldn’t be able to tell them my name.’

At the height of One Direction’s fame, Liam also turned to alcohol to cope with the long periods of boredom between shows because he and his bandmates were rarely able to leave their hotels without being mobbed.

He said: ‘Doing a show to however many thousands of people, then being stuck by yourself in a country where you can’t go out anywhere – what else are you going to do? The minibar is always there.’

Zayn Malik departed the band in 2015 with Liam admitting it was an anxious time for the group, who would go on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

The star admitted the group’s future was ‘touch and go’ at the time and he was ‘slowly losing the plot.’

Liam, who is in a relationship with model Maya Henry, 19, said he had more performing experience than his fellow One Direction bandmates when the group first formed on The X Factor in 2010.

The Wolverhampton native also described himself as more mature than his bandmates, leading his management to making him the person who would keep the group in line.

It comes after Liam was restrained in a tense confrontation during a tense confrontation at The Silver Fox in Texas on Friday evening, despite claiming he was jumped on by three bouncers.

In a video obtained by TMZ, the hitmaker was pulled away by a fellow clubgoer from what appeared to a heated argument alongside a laughing Maya.

The musician came face-to-face with the employees, with sources claiming Liam shouted: ‘Don’t f***ing push me again. I swear to God I’ll lay your a** out.’

Liam – who was enjoying Thanksgiving weekend in Maya’s state – is said to have become embroiled in the fiery discussion as he was reportedly pushed to the ground after the couple left and attempted to re-enter the venue.

MailOnline has contacted Liam’s representative for further comment.

Tagging the venue in a now-deleted Instagram story, Liam insisted the bouncers ‘jumped’ him.

He wrote on his widely-followed social media account: ‘Three of your bouncers just jump me for no reason whilst I was grabbing my ID.

‘I took pics of the whole thing, look forward to seeing you in court, a******s.’

However, the Strip It Down singer seemingly regretted his words to his 18.2million followers as he took the post down just minutes later.
