They took an indefinite hiatus in 2016 after Zayn Malik sensationally left in 2015.

And Liam Payne has sent One Direction fans wild by sharing a cryptic Instagram post on Saturday.

The Strip That Down singer, 25, took to the social media platform to post a picture of the band when they had just been on The X Factor and released their first single, What Makes You Beautiful, in 2011.

He simply and cryptically captioned it as: ‘1000 days.’

The post sent his fans into meltdown as they flocked to the comments section to ask what he meant and if could possibly mean a One Direction reunion.

One person said: ‘What does this means omg.’

It comes after supports were left heartbroken after they discovered that the boyband’s online merchandise store has been closed.

Alarmed fans of the four-piece were left in a tizzy on Twitter on Tuesday night after they noticed the shop had been shut down, leading them to suspect that the band is over for good since going on ‘hiatus’ in 2016.

The X Factor-formed band, which is made up of Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, decided to pursue other projects in January 2016 following the release of their final song History in December 2015.

The singer admitted, however, that their potential reunion won’t happen for at least two years as he is preoccupied with his successful solo career.

Speaking on the prospective plans, the For You singer said: ‘It’s amazing that we’re doing our own thing and then, hopefully one day soon, we get back together and have another great time of it, who knows?’
