Lib Dems’ Jo Swinson takes selfie before election TV plea to PM

A selfie smile for social media! Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson captures her best side as she appears on TV to temp Boris Johnson into backing her plan for an early election

  • Leader was there to sell a Remainer plan to break the Brexit deadlock
  • Lib Dems and SNP want to sideline Labour and call an election on December 9

The cameras were all on Jo Swinson this morning – including her own – as she set out to woo Boris Johnson into backing a new election deal.

The Remainer Lib Dem leader posed for a smiley selfie as she appeared on the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme this morning.

She was on the broadcasters’ flagship political programme to sell a Remainer opposition party plan to break the Brexit deadlock by sidelining Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party.

The behind-the-scenes images show her beaming into a mobile phone with a red case before she was interviewed, as she was joined by Labour’s Diane Abbott.

The image has yet to appear on the Lib Dem leader’s social media accounts for either her 153,000 Twitter followers or the 11,000 who follow her on Instagram.

Britain’s chances of having a general election in early December increased today after the Government hinted today it could support opposition parties’ efforts to sideline Labour and break the Brexit deadlock.

A No 10 source today suggested Boris Johnson would look at a proposal similar to that suggested by the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party if a planned Commons vote tomorrow fails.

Boris Johnson will ask MPs to agree on Monday to back his proposal for a December 12 election under the Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTPA), but is expected to be defeated.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has so far insisted that Boris Johnson must rule out a No Deal Brexit before he supports an election, something the PM will not do.

The rival  plan supported by Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon is for a bill that would allow Mr Johnson to secure a December election with a simple majority of MPs, by-passing the need for two-thirds support under the FTPA.

This means it would have a chance of passing without Labour support.

But the No 10 move comes after senior ministers had branded the Lib Dem plan a ‘stunt’ and a ‘gimmick’ in live television interviews.

The Number 10 source said:  ‘Tomorrow MPs will vote on an election on December 12 so we can get a new Parliament.

‘If Labour oppose being held to account by the people yet again, then we will look at all options to get Brexit done including ideas similar to that proposed by other opposition parties.’
