A senior Liberal minister has been mocked on social media for his bizarre choice of footwear during a live television appearance.

Clad in a suit and tie, Trade Minister Steven Ciobo completed his outfit with a pair of bulky, desert-coloured boots for the panel discussion in Davos, Switzerland.

One of the first to question Mr Ciobo’s unusual footwear was a political rival – Labor senator Murray Watt.

‘Is this acceptable for a Gold Coast MP?’ tweeted Senator Watt, who added several screenshots of the television appearance. 

Another commented: ‘Poor guy thought he was going to be behind a desk,’ while yet another said: ‘The Davos dress code: someone missed the memo.’ 

Yet another questioned: ‘He thought his white shoes were inappropriate?’

Mr Ciobo later slammed Senator Watt and the Labor party for focusing on his shoes rather than policy.

‘How unfortunate that Murray Watt and Labor are so vacuous they focus on something like this,’ Mr Ciobo told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘My attention is on reducing energy costs, creating employment and boosting tourism.

‘It is an indictment that Murray Watt is such a complete and utter lightweight.’

Senator Watt later tweeted: ‘Please don’t ask Steven Ciobo about THOSE shoes. He’s a little bit sensitive about them.’
