Lidl will open 40 stores in the UK this year as part of its £500million expansion drive.

The discount supermarket will open in the likes of Berwick, Redcar in North Yorkshire, Hull, Crediton in Devon and Manchester as it continues its bid to win customers.

It also published a wish list for hundreds of other areas where it would like to set up shop, from St Andrews in Scotland to Dawlish in Devon, as well as affluent parts of London including Chelsea and Mayfair.

The German retailer, which has more than 980 stores and 14 distribution centres in Britain, opened 23 stores last year.  As a battle for customers rages, industry data shows sales at Lidl in the three months to March 24 were 9.1 per cent higher than at the same point a year earlier.

This made the retailer the fastest growing supermarket as it attracted 385,000 shoppers last month. Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl GB, said: ‘This level of investment is a clear sign of our ambition.

‘There are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store.’
