Lily Allen talks hitting rock bottom and self-medicating

She’s remained in the spotlight since launching a career on My Space in 2005.

And in a candid interview in Saturday’s Herald Sun, Lily Allen reflected on the time in which she hit rock bottom and self-medicated with copious amounts of alcohol.

‘It was just a f**king mess,’ the 33-year-old admitted.

Lily revealed that after her first two records, she began to listen to other people’s suggestions, and hence fell into a downward spiral by trying to please others.

‘When you’re doing things because other people are suggesting them rather than it being your intention, then that’s when things didn’t feel right but it had gone too far for me to reel it back,’ she said.

The Not Fair hitmaker explained: ‘I started to drink copious amounts of alcohol in order to get on the stage and get off the stage, get up in the morning…it was pretty bad. It was just a f**king mess.’

Lily went on to say that she hit rock bottom when her marriage fell apart.

‘The rock bottom was my marriage falling apart. I lost half of my house and everything I built from the success of my first two albums,’ she said.

By her fourth album No Shame, Lily was able to regain control and get back into a far happier headspace.

This is not the first time the pink-haired songstress has spoken of her personal troubles during her musical comeback in 2014.

In an interview with Vulture last month, Lily admitted that she needed the help of others to regain a celebrity image after spending time focusing on her children, and it was then that the control over her image began to slip away.

She said: ‘I was 14 stone [approximately 88 kilograms] and I had to lose all that weight. I wasn’t eating, I wasn’t sleeping. I’d always been in control of my image, but I’d been a mum in slippers and a dressing gown for two years.’

Lily also admitted that she felt her struggles dealing with fame led her to cheat on husband Sam Cooper – the father of her two children Ethel, seven, and Marnie, five -who she split from in 2016.

She added: ‘I lost my sense of self. I lost my identity. I was being a bad mum. I was being bad at my job. I’d wake up on a tour bus in the middle of Wisconsin and be so hung-over.

‘I cheated on my husband. All I wanted to do was be with my kids. I wasn’t even making any money.’

But despite her past struggles, Lily appears to have bounced back in spectacular form, and having recently said that she and her two children are really close now and have a ‘great relationship.’
