James spoke about working on the program during an interview with The Guardian, where she stated that she felt as if her character could be featured in plenty stories regardless of time period.

‘It was huge fun to immerse myself in the period, although my character, Linda, could almost exist at any time, because she breaks all the rules,’ she said.

The actress went on to note that the show’s narrative could be adapted to any point in time.

‘It’s faithful to the period, but feels fresh…It’s rooted in history but also feels alive. You feel it could be taking place now,’ she said.

James also commented on the relationship between her character and Beecham’s and how it was reflected in the show.

‘There’s so much longing within both of them. They’re figuring things out through each other. It felt so true. It’s an ode to female friendship,’ she said.

The performer recalled that, although she was not familiar with her costar or director Emily Mortimer, they became very close during the show’s production process.

‘Rehearsals were over Zoom, so we didn’t meet until the first day of filming….I was definitely improved by being around the two Emilys, as I like to call them. We formed a real gang,’ she stated.
