Lily James had a flirtation with ANOTHER married man, Rebecca co-star Armie Hammer

Dominic West is not the only married man with whom Lily James has found her name intertwined.

Sources close to Rebecca co-star Armie Hammer and his wife say their marriage went into a nose-dive in the fall of 2019 after she found passionate texts and letters from a mystery woman who signed herself ‘Adeline’.

Adeline’s’ real identity is a mystery. But intriguingly, around the same time as the apparent dalliance, Armie was shooting the movie Rebecca, released on Netflix Wednesday, with co-star Lily James.

It was Lily’s intimate break with new co-star Dominic West in Rome this week that became the subject of frenzied international speculation after they were photographed in several compromising clinches.

And, while her Mrs. de Winter character in the adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel has no first name, James was referred to as Adeline on the movie call sheets and on her trailer, sources claim.

Adeline also happens to be the name of a character in another du Maurier novel, Hungry Hill.

Dominic West is not the only married man Lily James has been linked with.  She flirted with her then very married Rebecca co-star Armie Hammer, sources exclusively told DailyMail.com

This week sources on the set told the Mail that Lily James seemed to be flirting with her then very married co-star Hammer even though she knew the father-of-two was happily married to Elizabeth Chambers, 38.

At the time, former Downton star James’ relationship with her longtime boyfriend, actor Matt Smith, 37, had been cooling and observers said the beauty appeared to be ‘smitten’ with Hammer from the moment she laid eyes on him.

Said one source: ‘She was not subtle. And he was into it, no doubt about it. She was touching him constantly, giving him long smoldering looks.’

They added: ‘While he was filming, he chose to have weeks away in the English countryside instead of returning to see his family who were also in the UK. This is all very typical of him.’

Things finally came crashing down when Chambers discovered passionate messages between Hammer and the woman who called herself Adeline, the source said. Hammer also had a number saved in his phone under the same name.

Chambers was ‘devastated’, sparking a downward spiral that ended with Hammer and Chambers jointly announcing they were divorcing after 10 years of marriage in July.

Hammer and James began filming Netflix’s adaptation of the Gothic novel Rebecca in the UK in June of 2019, shooting in Devon, Dorset and Hertfordshire.

They added: 'While he was filming, he chose to have weeks away in the countryside instead of returning home to see his family, despite being away from them for several months at a time. This is all very typical of him'

When filming wrapped in August, Hammer and his family returned to Los Angeles but he returned to London alone weeks later.

Following his return to Los Angeles things really reached the point of no return, after Chambers discovered messages between Armie and ‘Adeline,’ the source said.

‘Elizabeth was devastated, heartbroken,’ they explained.

‘But they had 13 wonderful years together. She wasn’t about to throw away her marriage for one indiscretion.

‘She is an amazing woman. She doesn’t deserve this. You couldn’t ask for a more stunning devoted wife and she’s a great mom to their two little ones.’

Chambers decided to stick it out and work with Hammer on their marriage, even going to couple’s therapy. They had plans to renew their vows.

Chambers and Hammer were in the midst of their therapy when Covid-19 struck in mid-March. In April they announced their family was quarantining in the Cayman Islands – where Hammer had lived for five years as a child.

But the source explained that Hammer couldn’t take the close quarters and after two months, said he was going home to Los Angeles.

However, he went to Miami and accidentally sent Chambers a sexually explicit text from yet another woman that she knew wasn’t meant for her, the insider said.

That was the final straw for Chambers and on July 10, they both released an identical statement announcing their split, writing ‘Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents.

‘It has been an incredible journey, but together, we’ve decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage.

‘As we enter into this next chapter, our children and relationship as co-parents and dear friends will remain our priority.

‘We understand this news lends itself to public dialogue, but in the interest of our children and our family, we’re asking for privacy, compassion and love during this time.’

According to divorce papers, they each listed a different separation date, which could impact the alimony Hammer has to pay out if they were indeed married less than 10 years. The pair married in May 2010.

In a video interview for Harper's Bazaar magazine, shot last month, Lily was blazing the promo trail for her new movie Rebecca when she spoke of affairs, her rebellious streak and how she has made mistakes 'all the time'

Open and honest: The chat came in conjunction with her starring role on the cover of the November issue of the magazine

Hammer claims he and Chambers separated in January, while she listed the separation date in July.

Last week, Hammer asked a judge to order joint custody, claiming Chambers isn’t returning home to LA and is choosing to stay in the Cayman Islands with Harper and Ford, according to The Blast

Chambers had filed for sole physical custody of their children, while Hammer requested joint legal and physical custody.

The Call Me By Your Name actor claims he hasn’t seen his children since July, as his legal team writes in legal papers: ‘As the coronavirus pandemic worsened in the United States, Elizabeth and Armie elected to stay with their children temporarily in the Cayman Islands where the pandemic appeared to be under greater control.

‘Armie returned to Los Angeles this past July, with a promise from Elizabeth that she and the children would follow shortly thereafter.

‘To date, however, Elizabeth and the children remain in the Cayman Islands and Armie has not seen the children in several months now.”

But sources tell DailyMail.com Chambers wants their children to remain in the Caymans because ‘it’s Covid free, the children can have their friends to play with and are in physical school living a normal life. Life in LA would be bad for them.

They quipped: ‘[Hammer] abandoned them in July. He left the family and now he wants part-time custody? So they return to Covid-infested LA? Not going to happen.’

Hammer personally wrote in the legal filing: ‘When I asked Elizabeth when she was coming home, however, she first told me that the airports were closed. Then I was informed through her attorneys that flights were merely limited but that she and our children would be back in Los Angeles on the first flight in October. It is now several weeks into October and they have not returned.”

“I believe we are both good, loving parents, and I have tried to be patient as I know that this is a stressful time for all of us who are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. I have no doubt that Elizabeth and I both want what is best for our children.

“But I have not seen our children since July and I miss them deeply.’

Meanwhile, since the split, Hammer has been seen getting close with a bevy of beauties including Rumor Willis.

And although Lily has stayed quiet on the recent photos with West, an old interview resurfaced, where she spoke about ‘making mistakes’, ‘women having affairs’ and her ‘rebellious streak’.

Lily’s chat with Harper’s Bazaar was shot remotely with the magazine’s Commissioning Editor, Charlotte Brook, who spoke to the star over Zoom while she was in Somerset shooting The Pursuit Of Love with Dominic, where the cast and crew of the production were placed in a bubble together.

Even though shooting is over, the pair were spotted, along with their shared manager, enjoying an idyllic break in Rome where they shared an electric scooter and cuddled over lunch.

On his return to his family home in England a smirking West, far from finding his belongings on the drive, posed for kisses and cuddles with Catherine FitzGerald, his wife of ten years and the mother of his two children, as the couple insisted there marriage was rock solid.

In the video, the star said: ‘I feel I’ve rebelled in that way, I was always a rebellious teenager and I think it’s important to rebel in that way. I think criticism can be good if it’s constructive but I feel like if it’s attacking you or a vendetta that’s really difficult but I’m still learning….

‘I’m still figuring it out but I do think I can grow and develop a thicker skin. All that matters is those who love you.’

Speaking about Rebecca, she went on: ‘The character against Rebecca, she went against all norms as a woman, disobeyed her husband and had affairs was basically just brilliant and that was only in the 30s and people are afraid of women when they’re unleashed and women are warriors and that’s intimidating.’

On making mistakes, she continued: ‘I think I make mistakes all the time and I feel that’s what life’s about and I would never want to run away from a situation or be too scared to act…

‘I think it’s better to throw yourself in and if your instincts are right even if they’re misguided or if you’re open you can recover from your mistakes and learn from them’.
