Lily-Rose Depp has admitted she would sometimes ‘steer clear’ of The Weeknd on the set of The Idol.

The actress, 24, noted how she kept away from her co-star, 33, when he verged on method acting, but insisted that: ‘nobody lost their minds.’

HBO drama The Idol, which has beenpanned by critics for its sexual content, follows Lily-Rose as a derailed pop star named Jocelyn, who attempts to regain her status as the ‘greatest and sexiest pop star in America.’

She connects with nightclub promoter and cult leader Tedros, played by The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye.

As the controversial series prepares to debut on June 4, Lily-Rose has spoken out about the filming process and the atmosphere on set.

Lily-Rose confessed to Entertainment Weekly: ‘I don’t think anybody went full method – nobody lost their minds.

‘Well, sometimes when Abel would get – I don’t want to reveal too much about where Abel’s character goes, but when he would be in full Tedros mode sometimes, I would steer clear of him, I’d be like, ”He’s in his zone right now.” 

However, Lily-Rose praised the atmosphere on said, explaining: ‘For something that does, of course, explore darker themes and has some pretty heavy emotional moments to it and everything, the vibe on set was quite lighthearted.’

It comes after director and co-creator Sam Levinson addressed the show’s controversies at a news conference in Cannes.

‘We live in a very sexualize world,’ he said, ‘especially in the states, and I think the influence of pornography is really strong in terms of the psyche of, I think, young people in the states.

‘We see this in pop music and how it sort of reflects the underbelly of the internet. I think it’s very true to what almost every pop star doing these days.’

Lily-Rose said she was involved in creating all the aspects of her character Joselyn, including the amount of nudity on the screen.

‘I think the occasional bareness of the character physically mirrors the bareness that we get to see emotionally in her and that’s something I felt was really important to the character.’

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress said she was inspired by Sharon Stone, along with screen sirens Lauren Bacall and Gene Tierney.

Meanwhile, The Weekend wanted to tackle his home turf, explaining: ‘I initially wanted to make a dark, twisted fairy tale with the music industry and everything I know about it, and heighten it.

‘We really wanted to focus on “can we create our own pop star? Can we create somebody who is trying to find themselves?”‘
