Lion bites through wheel of sanctuary staff’s vehicle

  • Incident occurred at Glen Garriff Conservation in Harrismith, South Africa
  • Team member watched as lion started sniffing, then gnawing vehicle’s wheel
  •  Amid laughter, the ranger says: ‘Oh no, man, no! What’ve you done?’

Puncturing a tyre on a nail is one thing.

But it’s quite another to have it deflated by a lion’s bite, as one park ranger found out.

This is the worrying – and impressive – moment that one such mighty beast started sniffing some wheel rubber before ‘going in for the kill’ by gnawing at it.

The footage was taken at Glen Glarriff Conservation in South Africa, which is home to around 70 lions, on private land in Harrismith.

In the video, the lion can be seen biting the tyre of a team member’s vehicle before becoming startled when it is punctured, letting out a loud hiss.

It is common for the staff to interact with the animals – but this sort of incident is highly unusual.

Just don’t get any ideas about trying to copy such a feat: the average strength of a human bite is 162 pounds per square inch (PSI) – while that of a lion is around 1,000 PSI.
