A journalist was left speechless after a lion sprayed him with urine while he was in the middle of trying to film a report.

Channel Nine’s Mike Dalton was left soaked after the animal sprayed him at Zambi Wildlife Retreat at Wallacia, in western Sydney, on Tuesday.

His guide Donna Wilson, who had been leading the veteran reporter around the animal sanctuary, was left highly amused.

‘He looks at you as being as, I don’t know, maybe another rival,’ she said.

‘He’s making sure you smell like him, and not like you.’

Dalton had been visiting the retreat for a report on retired entertainment animals.

Part of the sanctuary is still under construction and will only be open to guests through invitation or bookings later in the year.

Getting a look behind the scenes, Dalton toured the grounds to visit the many exotic animals, which include former circus and show business lions.

After being introduced to the more tame puma Koda and tigers Zoran and Mischka, Dalton came across former circus lion Korvu.

The 15-year-old was sitting in its temporary enclosure as it waited for its new home to be built on the grounds.

A curious Dalton crouched next to the lion as his tour guide Ms Wilson patted the relaxed animal through the wired fence.

‘He’s really friendly and happy,’ Ms Wilson said.

Before long the lion turned its backside to spray urine at the news reporter.

A well prepared Ms Wilson anticipated the move and was quick enough to lean out of the way.

Though a surprised Dalton sprang to his feet and jumped into the firing line.

A bemused Dalton was left stunned, his glasses wet and his suit jacket soaked.

‘I think I’ve made a friend,’ he quipped.
