Lionel Messi continues to excel even if he isn’t on the pitch as much as he used to be.

Messi has enjoyed yet another outstanding season with Barcelona, winning La Liga and into the last four of the Champions League. 

The 31-year-old has started 38 out of 54 games this season – a record low for him since the 2008/09 campaign.

Messi has suffered with injury this season, having to sit out with a broken elbow, and has also been used more sparingly by manager Ernesto Valverde.

He has scored 34 goals in La Liga this season and has notched 10 times in the Champions League.

He will be aiming to score again when he and his team-mates take on Liverpool in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier competition on Wednesday night.

Asked about Messi ahead of the game at the Nou Camp, Valverde said: ‘Lionel is feeling fine, and throughout this month we have been able to rest him more than others. 

‘We have been playing three games a week, we’ve played United and now it’s Liverpool. The workload is high but we are ready for this.’
