Lisa Wilkinson shares thoughts on a possible career in politics

She’s one of Australia’s most loved journalists and television presenters.

And it looks like Lisa Wilkinson could one day be adding politician to her already impressive list of titles.

During this week’s episode of The Sunday Project, the 58-year-old appeared flustered when quizzed by co-host Hamish Macdonald about a change of career.

‘I’m really interested and fascinated by it’: The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson shares thoughts on a possible career in politics as ‘no one is sticking to what they believe in’

Hamish approached the subject during an interview with Dr Kerryn Phelps, who recently confirmed her bid for Malcolm Turnbull’s Sydney seat of Wentworth.

The broadcast journalist asked: ‘How do you think Lisa would fare against someone like Tony Abbott given the mood you’re describing?’

As Dr Phelps responded that she would be ‘awesome,’ Lisa quickly added that she ‘already had a job.’

Lisa then added: ‘I am ruling it out, I do not know where this has come from!’

However, as Hamish pushed her for more answers, it appeared that all hope may not be lost at the thought of Lisa persuring a political career.

‘It was in the newspaper, that’s where it’s come from,’ Hamish responded while once again asking for a confirmation if it could be the works.

He said: ‘As an Independent, maybe, one day?’

A slightly flustered Lisa then didn’t specifically deny the potential change in career, and instead discussed the logistics that would surround it.

Lisa said: ‘Erm… Look, I’m really interested, fascinated, by politics, but I think the life of a politician would just be awful and I admire people who go for it.’

‘And really stuck by what they believe in.

‘But I think that’s the problem in the political climate at the moment, no one is sticking to what they believe in and that’s why Michael Turnbull went.’

Wish Hamish still not satisfied as her response, he continued: ‘Can you honestly tell me you don’t think that you’d do a better job than Tony Abbott representing your community?’

Lisa then concluded the chat, responding: ‘I am not going to answer that question [laughs]. It would come back to haunt me!’

Later on during this week’s episode of The Sunday Project, Lisa’s worldwide exclusive interview with Serena Williams finally aired.

Serena Williams sat down for an interview with Australian presenter just three days after her antics at the US Open Grand Final made international news.

And while the world number 16 agreed to discuss the on-court drama, there was one question that was strictly off-limits as it finally aired.

Lisa revealed that she was warned prior to her sit-down that Serena would walk out if she mentioned the controversial cartoon of the sportswoman drawn by Australian artist Mark Knight.
