Lisa Wilkinson takes a swipe at the media over sexist double standards

‘I wish them the best in the breakfast wars!’ Lisa Wilkinson congratulates Today show’s new team after Deborah Knight joins Georgie Gardner as co-host… before taking a swipe at the media for sexist double standards

Lisa Wilkinson has publicly congratulated the new Today show team after the breakfast program’s revamped lineup was announced on Saturday.

Deborah Knight will now co-host Today alongside Georgie Gardner, while Tom Steinfort will replace Sylvia Jeffreys as newsreader.

‘Warmest congratulations to the fab new team just announced at the Today show of Georgie Gardner, Deborah Knight, Tom Steinfort and Tony Jones,’ Lisa wrote on Instagram.

She added: ‘I sincerely wish them all the very best in the breakfast wars ahead.’

However, The Project star couldn’t help but take a swipe at the media after noticing that a newspaper article announcing the new lineup had pointed out the ages of Today’s female talent.

‘But as my media studies student daughter noted to me, why oh why oh why, in the reporting of the new team do the ages of the women need to be pointed out while the men’s don’t?’ quizzed Lisa.

She also took issue with the article mentioning that Deborah is a mother.

‘Similarly, Deb being a mum-of-three is considered significant, but Tony being a dad isn’t?

‘I don’t understand and we obviously have a long way to go when it comes to gender equity.’

Lisa left the Today show and Channel Nine in 2017 to join Channel Ten’s The Project.

On Saturday, Deborah Knight was announced as Karl Stefanovic’s official replacement on Today.

Knight, 46, will become Georgie Gardner’s morning co-host on the program – making it the first time Nine has appointed two female presenters to helm Today.

The TV journalist was chosen over a long list of contenders for the top job, including Brenton Ragless and Ben Fordham.

Tom Steinfort, 33, was also announced as newsreader, replacing Sylvia Jeffreys, who was recently let go from Today.

Allison Langdon, 39, will co-host Weekend Today alongside David Campbell, 45.

David will also co-host Today Extra with Sonia Kruger, 53, from Monday to Wednesday, with Richard Wilkins, 64, hosting Thursday and Fridays.

The new look team will hit the airwaves on Monday, January 14.

Melbourne sports presenter Tony Jones and Nine Finance Editor Ross Greenwood will also join Today.

The new, practically all-female line-up for Today is indicative of Nine bosses’ desperate attempts to claw back the program’s female viewers who have ditched the show in droves over the past year or so.
