LIV Golf could return to another Australian city after New South Wales broke rank to make its pitch to host an event following the success of this weekend’s event in Adelaide.

The Saudi-backed golf tournament has not been a hit with fans in the United States and elsewhere, but it’s enjoyed its most positive reception yet in Adelaide, with a party atmosphere taking over the Grange Golf Club.

Tickets for all three days have been sold out, with 40 per cent of fans travelling from states outside of South Australia to catch a glimpse of Cam Smith and the best golfers LIV has to offer.

And according to The Age, other states have taken notice of the success of the inaugural tournament, with New South Wales prepared to make a pitch to host another event in the future.

‘This is the future of golf in Australia and the format of golf in Australia needs to learn from the success of the LIV event in Adelaide, and consider change with spectators in mind as a key pillar in the national strategy,’ Golf NSW chairman Michael Medway said.

‘We would welcome a LIV event in New South Wales.’

A decision on a future host will hinge on whether venues have the infrastructure to accommodate huge numbers of fans, with Adelaide hosting 63,000 spectators over three days.

Smith is also expected to have a big influence on where the next event would go. The 29-year-old is from Queensland, meaning an event on the Gold Coast could be on the cards.

‘I think it would be unreal up there,’ Smith said. ‘If we can squeeze two in, it’s my home state, so it would be kind of a personal preference.’
