Liverpool and Tottenham see Premier League fixtures brought forward to help preparations ahead of Champions League semi-finals

  • Liverpool and Tottenham have had Premier League fixtures moved forward
  • Tottenham will now play Bournemouth on Saturday May 4 rather than on May 6
  • Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle has been switched to a Saturday evening game
  • Both clubs are still in the Champions League and are pushing for a final spot

Liverpool and Tottenham have been handed a boost ahead of the Champions League semi-finals after both saw Premier League fixtures brought forward.

On the penultimate weekend of domestic action, Liverpool were due to make the trip to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon while Tottenham would host AFC Bournemouth on Monday evening.

Having progressed to the last four of Europe’s premier club competition, the Premier League has looked to give the two sides the best chance of reaching the final in Madrid by bringing games forward to extend preparation time.

Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasing Liverpool side will now go to the north-east on Saturday evening for a 7.45pm kick-off.

The match was due to form part of Sky Sports’ Super Sunday but despite being brought forward a day, it will still be a televised fixture.

Tottenham saw their semi-final opponents handed a major boost this week as the Dutch FA opted to postpone all Eredivise matches the weekend before the semi-final stage.

Ajax were due to play De Graafschap on Sunday week, two days before the first leg on April 30. Instead, the Dutch league delayed the full schedule for that weekend until May 15.

That gives Erik ten Hag’s Ajax team plenty of time to rest, recuperate and research their opposition but Spurs themselves have been aided by the league as the Bournemouth game has come forward.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were initially scheduled to conclude the penultimate weekend by going to Bournemouth on Monday evening.

That fixture will now kick-off two days earlier with a 12.30pm start agreed for the televised game.

Tottenham reiterated to supporters that their home game against West Ham will remain on Saturday 27 April.

Pochettino had pleaded with the Premier League to follow the example of the Dutch FA and give their teams the best chance of success.

He said: ‘For the semi-final, we need to make sure both teams have the same days to prepare for the game if we want to be fair. Both teams deserve the same preparation.’

Tottenham were dealt a blow in their hopes for the top four on Saturday as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 away to Manchester City to hand advantage to rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.
