Liverpool will meet Tottenham in the first all-English Champions League final since Manchester United beat Chelsea in Moscow in 2008.
The setting 11 years later will be in Madrid but the fixture itself signifies a potential shift in fortune for English sides in Europe after a decade of Spanish dominance spearheaded by Real Madrid.

2008-09 – Semi-finals: Manchester United 4-1 Arsenal, Barcelona 1-1 Chelsea
WINNERS: Barcelona (2-0 v Manchester United)
A final synonymous with Lionel Messi’s sensational looping header over Edwin van der Sar, Barcelona won their third European Cup by defeating Manchester United in Rome.
It had been all-English affair in the last four, with United beating Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate while Barcelona overcame Chelsea on away goals with the tie ending 1-1 after two legs.

2009-10 – Semi finals: Bayern Munich 4-0 Lyon, Inter Milan 3-2 Barcelona
WINNERS: Inter Milan (2-0 v Bayern Munich)
A brace from Diego Milito wrapped up Jose Mourinho’s most recent Champions League title at the Santiago Bernabeu.
There were no English sides in the last four this time around; Inter beat Barcelona and Bayern saw off Lyon to make it to Madrid.

2010-11 – Semi-finals: Schalke 1-6 Manchester United, Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona
WINNERS: Barcelona (3-1 v Manchester United)
Again Manchester United reached the Champions League final and again, they were met by Barcelona. In one of the most complete Champions League final displays, Pep Guardiola’s side ran out 3-1 winners.
It was only United who made the last four from the Premier League that season, beating Schalke to reach the final. Barcelona saw off Real Madrid.

2011-12- Semi-finals: Benfica 1-3 Chelsea, Bayern Munich 3-3 Barcelona
WINNERS: Chelsea (1-1, 4-3 on penalties v Bayern Munich)
The year an injury-stricken Chelsea went into the lion’s den and won. Bayern were looking to avenge their loss in the final from two years ago and, in their own stadium, were hot favourites to do just that against Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea. But a Didier Drogba-inspired side upset the odds to win on penalties.
It was only Chelsea in the last four from England that season. They beat Barcelona while Bayern Munich overcame Real Madrid.

2012-13 – Semi-finals: Bayern Munich 7-0 Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund 4-3 Real Madrid
WINNERS: Bayern Munich (2-1 v Borussia Dortmund)
Finally, Bayern got hold of the trophy, coming from a goal down and defeating Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
The semi-final had very much been a ‘Germany v Spain’ affair, with Bayern beating Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate and Dortmund dumping out Real Madrid.

2013-14 – Semi-finals: Real Madrid 5-0 Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid 3-1 Chelsea
WINNERS: Real Madrid (4-1 v Atletico Madrid)
The beginning of relentless Spanish dominance in the Champions League, Real Madrid overcame city rivals Atletico Madrid in a match that was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
Three goals in extra time from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo sealed victory for Madrid, and it would be a while before they let go of it.

2014-15 – Semi-finals: Barcelona 5-3 Bayern Munich, Juventus 3-2 Real Madrid
WINNERS: Barcelona (3-1 v Juventus)
Barcelona, with a viscous three-pronged attack of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, ran out 3-1 winners in the final against Juventus, who had seen off Real Madrid in the semis.
Messi had famously left Bayern’s Jerome Boateng on his backside in the other semi-final as Pep Guardiola endured a miserable return to the Nou Camp.

2015-16 – Semi-finals: Manchester City 0-1 Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid 2-2 Bayern Munich
WINNERS: Real Madrid (1-1 v Atletico Madrid, 5-3 on penalties)
Again, Atletico took Real into extra time and this time, beyond, but could not overcome their fierce foes.
Manchester City, meanwhile, were the first English side to reach the last four of the tournament since Chelsea in 2014. It remains as far as they have ever gone in the competition.

2016-17 – Semi-finals: Real Madrid 4-2 Atletico Madrid, Monaco 1-4 Juventus
WINNERS: Real Madrid (4-1 v Juventus)
A third Champions League triumph in four seasons for Real Madrid and arguably the most commanding one of them all. Ronaldo scored twice while Casemiro and Marco Asensio also got in on the act. It made Real the first side to win back-to-back Champions Leagues.
Juventus had beaten a brilliant young Monaco side featuring the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Fabinho to reach the final.

2017-18 – Semi-finals: Bayern Munich 3-4 Real Madrid, Liverpool 7-6 Roma
WINNERS: Real Madrid (3-0 v Liverpool)
A final that will forever be remembered for the two mistakes made by Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius for goals by Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale.
It was Liverpool’s first appearance in the last four of the tournament since 2006-07, when they were runners-up.
Now, Liverpool will have a chance to avenge that memory on June 1 against Tottenham.
