Nunez, who came on in the second half, scored his first Liverpool goal from the spot in the 48th minute – a weak penalty but one that clearly provided him with confidence.

Six minutes into his night he had two, collecting a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and finishing clinically before wrapping up his treble on 68 minutes.

The £85m centre forward added another in the final minute from a pass by Fabio Carvalho, another of Liverpool’s summer signings, to claim his fourth goal.

Having patiently waited for Nunez to get off the mark, fans on social media have been sent into a frenzy after his four-goal haul and cannot hold back comparisons with their legendary Spanish No.9.

One user claimed: ‘Nunez’s movement was like prime Torres in his first season at Liverpool in 2008, aggressive quick and always on the last defenders shoulder.’

‘Nunez really gives off Torres vibes doesn’t he? Unorthodox centre forward with an eye for goal. His movement frees up so much space around him. Makes you wonder if we should change to a 4231 as he creates so much space for a number 10 to operate in. Like Torres did for Stevie…’ another fan tweeted.
