Klopp said: ‘I spoke to him the night after the game and he was in the best possible place.

‘He’d already accepted he’d be out for a while and today he is in London and will have the surgery today. That’s obviously the next step on the way back. We wait for the news and that’s it.’

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker also spoke about the reaction of the squad to Elliott’s injury, saying: ‘What happened with Harvey made me sad.

‘It’s difficult to deal with that when you’re on the pitch. All the players have a big role to support him, we need to do our best in this time.’

Klopp also admitted his side had been drawn in a ‘difficult’ group in the Champions League this season, alongside Atletico Madrid and Porto as well as Milan.

‘When we all saw the group, not one [team] said “it’s a great group”‘, Klopp said.

‘It’s a tough group. That’s proper Champions League and that’s what we get. It’s all about getting enough points, we start with that tomorrow night.

‘It’s been a long time since a Champions League game at home [with fans], European nights at Anfield and I can’t wait to experience that again now, I’m really looking forward to it.’
