Liverpool ‘open new contract talks with Naby Keita’ to stop the midfielder leaving on a free… just months after losing Gini Wijnaldum to PSG after he ran his deal down

Liverpool have reportedly entered into negotiations with Naby Keita over a new contract at the club. 

Keita – who completed a £52million move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool in 2017 – has just two years remaining on his contract at Anfield.  

It is believed the Merseyside club are trying to avoid the mistake they made with Gini Wijnaldum – who left on a free transfer after talks over a new deal broke down – according to Calciomercato.

Upon Keita’s arrival at the club, took the No 8 shirt – which hadn’t been worn since Steven Gerrard left the club.

However, Keita – who was once described as ‘the complete midfielder’- has struggled to prove his worth are suffering an injury ridden career at the club. 

As a result, he was linked with a summer departure – with LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid touted as his likely destination.

Diego Simeone was said to be a long-term admirer of the Guinea international. However, the LaLiga manager was not convinced about making a move given his form at Liverpool. 

Keita has made four appearances for the Reds this season but speculation over the midfielder’s future at the club remains. 

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are looking to extend Keita’s contract after they came underfire for allowing Wijnaldum to depart for nothing.

However, he left the club to join Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain on a free-transfer this summer.  

Therefore, Liverpool are eager to avoid making the same mistake and have subsequently agreed new terms with Henderson, Fabinho, Alisson Becker, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold. 

Now they are looking to do the same with out of favour midfielder, Keita.
