It may have been over three months since the Champions League final, but it would appear Liverpool star Dejan Lovren is still not quite over their defeat to Real Madrid.

Sergio Ramos remains public enemy No 1 in the red half of Merseyside after injuring Mohamed Salah early in that final, but was named the best defender of the 2017-18 campaign by UEFA on Thursday.

That didn’t go down well with Lovren, who left an unambiguous comment on the Instagram post from the Champions League’s official account. The Croatian used two ‘hand-over-eyes’ emojis as if to say, ‘You must be joking’.

Ramos, 32, became the target of Liverpool’s frustrations following Real Madrid’s 3-1 win in Kiev. He was accused of purposely grappling Salah to the floor, dislocating his shoulder and bringing a premature end to his night.

He appeared to revel in that conjecture and later questioned whether the Egyptian star needed to go off at all. The war of words has also seen Jurgen Klopp and the aforementioned Lovren wage into the debate.

Earlier this summer, Klopp described Ramos as ‘ruthless and brutal’ and the 32-year-old hit back by saying the Germain should ‘stick to his own business’ before bringing up his poor record in finals.

‘He will be wanting to explain not winning the final, but it’s not the first that he has lost,’ Ramos smarted. ‘Some of us have been operating at a very high level for many years – not sure he can say the same. Let Klopp worry about his own players.’

To make matters worse, the Real Madrid captain was sat directly behind Salah at Thursday’s ceremony and Liverpool fans blew up across social media after TV cameras caught Ramos tapping their star player on the shoulder he injured.

Whether intentional or not, Salah did not react to the touch, and appeared to ignore the player who left him in tears in Kiev last season.

Ramos was not the only Real Madrid star to pick up an award at the Champions League draw in Monaco. The Spanish side completed a clean sweep with Keylor Navas winning Goalkeeper of the Season, Luka Modric the Midfielder and overall Player of the Season and Cristiano Ronaldo the Forward of the Season.
