Lizzo campaigns to play Ursula in The Little Mermaid reboot over frontrunner Melissa McCarthy

Hours after Variety reported that two-time Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy was ‘in early talks’ to star as Ursula in Rob Marshall’s CGI/live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, Lizzo continued her campaign to play the Disney octo-villain.

The 31-year-old rapper-singer-flutist tweeted a sad pleading eyes emoji over the article about the 48-year-old mother-of-two’s possible casting on Friday.

The Juice hitmaker then retweeted a video of herself belting a few bars of Poor Unfortunate Souls in costume as the sinister sea witch last Halloween.

Lizzo (born Melissa Jefferson) just met Melissa at the MTV Movie and TV Awards on June 15 and McCarthy later gushed about their close encounter on Instagram.

The Can You Ever Forgive Me actress captioned a snap of the moment: ‘Hopefully when I grabbed @lizzobeeating and told her I loved her, 1% of her magic was transferred to me so now by osmosis I am 1% that b****.’

Urusula was famously voiced by Pat Carroll in the 1989 animated classic, but producer-lyricist Howard Ashman based the look and feel of the character on his friend from Baltimore, drag icon Divine.

And while it’s unknown how well Melissa can actually sing, she proved her Divine cred by dressing up like his Pink Flamingos character Babs Johnson for an Entertainment Weekly spread back in 2011.
