Locals surround playboy Jody Sanders after crash into Majorcan shop

This is the moment a millionaire playboy and two female party pals in bikinis are surrounded by angry locals after he smashes his £270,000 Rolls-Royce into a Spanish tobacco shop.

Furious bystanders in the Majorcan village of Portals Nous near the upmarket port of Puerto Portals shout out they could have been killed as sheepish British tycoon Jody Sanders emerges from the wreckage of his luxury vehicle.

He still appears to be in a state of shock as he climbs out of his Rolls-Royce Dawn Coupe at the scene of Sunday evening’s crash.

Jody Sanders, believed to be in his 30s, lost control of his vehicle as he reversed the wrong way up a road near Magaluf, Majorca

Extraordinary footage of the aftermath of the smash, which self-styled ‘maverick tycoon’ Sanders said happened after his sandals wedged under the pedals, emerged on Tuesday as he started to deal with his four-figure repair bill.

Traffic police and witnesses said the entrepreneur and his pretty female friends, said to have come from a beach club in Magaluf, left the accident scene without waiting to be breathalysed.

Sanders, who brags on social media of a champagne lifestyle and ownership of cars including the damaged Rolls-Royce as well as a Lamborghini and Mercedes Sport, was believed to have been tracked down after a police investigation.

Onlookers said he came close to hitting diners on a packed restaurant terrace as he reversed the wrong way up a road at high speed before crashing.

‘We saw the car pass a few minutes earlier,’ Jose Martin, manager of a restaurant near the crash scene, said.

‘The man was driving and the music was blaring and two very pretty South American women were in bikinis dancing and taking selfies.

‘They pulled into the car park of a supermarket that was closed just down the road and were sat there for around five minutes.

‘The next minute there was this tremendous noise and the car reversed up the road at speed and hit the kerb just outside the restaurant terrace before spinning round and smashing into the tobacco shop next door.

‘If he had hit the kerb a few seconds earlier we could have been looking at a major loss of life. There were about 20 people on the terrace at the time.

‘I took the numberplate of the car down and called police but by the time they arrived the driver and the two women were gone.

‘They seemed initially to be in a state of shock and they were covered in glass from the broken shop window, then they left on foot.’

Tobacco shop manager Mamen Maria said said she had to put a 24-hour security watch on the shop merchandise to avoid it being taken.

She on Tuesday said Sanders called her to ask for insurance details after causing about £13,000 to her shop and at least as much damage to his car.

‘We’re hearing he could be let off with a fine for dangerous driving and that will be the end of the matter as far as police are concerned,’ another local said.

‘But it’s all hearsay at the moment. We’re not really sure what’s going on.’

Another witness, who asked not to be named, said: ‘I’ve got friends who work at Nikki Beach and he told me they were there during the day.

‘The driver looked the worse for wear when he got out of his car. Shock is one thing but he seemed to me to be high on drink and possibly something else.

‘He tried to drive away from the crash scene but the steering on the Rolls-Royce had gone and he had to abandon the car because it wouldn’t go any further.’

Police, who on Monday morning were still trying to locate the driver of the Rolls-Royce with its personalised numberplate JODY, could not be reached for comment.

The footage featuring the aftermath of the crash showed Jody, believed to be in his thirties, was skimpily dressed like his female companions.

Video taken by onlookers before he crashed showed the women – believed to be South American – dancing and listening to loud music before their Sanders suddenly and unexpectedly started reversing backwards.

Wearing sandals is not specifically banned but if traffic police feel a driver’s footwear is potentially dangerous – and flip flops and high heels usually come under that category – they can impose fines of about £70.

Civil Guard officers also said on Monday the paperwork for the Rolls Royce didn’t exactly match the numberplate on the car.

It was not immediately clear if police had tracked down and spoken to Sanders, although his phone call to the tobacco shop he wrecked showed he was not making any attempt to evade his responsibility.

He could not be reached by phone to make any comment and appeared to have taken down his Facebook page overnight after his involvement in Sunday’s drama was made public.

Sanders, thought to be in his 30s and from Warwickshire, flaunts his wealth on social media, with pictures showing him swigging from a bottle of champagne at the wheel of a expensive car thought to be the one he crashed in.
