Logan alcoholic who rode her horse to a shop speaks out

A 51-year-old self confessed alcoholic says she didn’t think she was putting anyone in danger when she rode her horse to a bottle shop allegedly while four times the limit.

Charmaine Maguire from Logan, south of Brisbane, was charged with drink driving after she allegedly rode her horse to a bottle shop on Tuesday night and refused to leave when staff wouldn’t serve her.

In footage captured of the incident a woman can be seen dismounting a horse as a police officer tells her, ‘It’s the same as driving a car, you can’t ride a horse over the legal limit.’

It’s not the first time Charmaine, who admits to drinking, ‘a couple of bottles of wine a day,’ has rode her horse to get more alcohol, but she may now have to reconsider her mode of transport.

‘I was trying to enjoy my horse thinking I wasn’t doing any harm to anybody and I wasn’t putting anybody in danger,’ Charmaine told 9News

‘If it’s the law, which i’m not sure of, then I won’t be able to do anything about it,’ she said.

According to Officer Damian Honsig-Erlenburg, ‘If it’s there to transport you and it’s an animal then you cant do it under the influence.’

Springwood officers were called to the tavern on Wembley Road at Logan Central around 11:30pm when a woman refused to leave the premises.

She was arrested and taken to Logan Central Police Station where she allegedly provided a positive blood alcohol content level of 0.226 per cent or four times the legal limit.

The woman was then charged with being in charge of a horse whilst under the influence of liquor.

She is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on June 26.
