Emergency is declared in Queensland as a suburb is locked down – with police in a standoff with an armed man: ‘Remain indoors’
- Police arrested a Logan man Thursday morning
- He negotiated with officers from his home for nine hours
- Police believed he was armed with a firearm
A southeast Queensland man who was believed to be holed up in his home with a firearm has surrendered himself to police following nine hours of negotiations.
Police said it started tense talks with the alleged gunman, aged 27, at about 11.45pm on Wednesday in Logan Reserve, 40km southwest of Brisbane CBD.
The long negotiation saw an emergency situation declared shortly before 6am on Thursday which triggered an exclusion zone encompassing surrounding streets.
Queensland Police Acting Inspector Jason Barrowcliffe said officers approached the front door of the Chambers Flat Road property shortly before midnight following a noise complaint.
Queensland Police officers (pictured at the scene) began negotiations with a man they believe to be armed shortly after 12am before declaring an exclusion zone at 6am
However, officers withdrew after seeing what they believed to be a firearm in the man’s hand.
The 27-year-old peacefully surrendered himself into custody at about 8.40am.
‘The male person was in an agitated state so he was negotiating at some points, other times he wasn’t,’ Insp. Barrowcliffe told reporters.
‘This morning he came out of the house and started face-to-face negotiations. He then surrendered and was secured in the front yard.’
When asked if the man did have a firearm, Insp. Barrowcliffe said: ‘We don’t know yet.
‘A search warrant is being executed on the home but until we know the result, I can’t accurately say.’

Insp. Barrowcliffe added that the man is known to police.
He was unharmed during the incident and was alone at the property.
Chambers Flat Road, School Road, Logan Reserve Road and the local state school were all affected by the lockdown.
Officers directed traffic away from the exclusion zone while those living within it were urged to stay inside their homes.
