London Uber driver ‘grabbed drunk customer and raped her’

An Uber driver is accused of grabbing a customer from her doorstep and raping her on the back seat of his cab, a court heard.

Muhammad Durrani, 38, allegedly attacked the 27 year-old woman after picking her up outside a live music club in Clapham, south London, jurors heard.

When they arrived at her home he got out and followed her before lifting her up in his arms and carrying her back to his Toyota, it is claimed.

The alleged victim gave Durrani a ‘one star rating’ and sent Uber a complaint for ‘unprofessional behaviour’ later the same day, Southwark Crown Court heard.

She told police in interview: ‘I was obviously very very drunk, and he was the sober driver who picked me up and took me to the back of his car without my wanting him to.

‘He picked me up, he carried me to his car, I ended up in the back of his car and he performed a sex act and I didn’t remember ever giving any formal consent for that.’

The woman had spent the night drinking with girlfriends in London Bridge and Clapham before ordering the Uber taxi.

She admitted drinking around ‘six medium or large glasses of wine’ throughout the evening.

‘I remember thinking I was feeling quite drunk, I need to go home because I thought that was the safest option,’ she said.

Durrani collected her from Northcote Records in Clapham Junction just after midnight on July 24, 2016, the court heard.

She fell asleep but was woken by Durrani as they arrived around the corner from her home.

The alleged victim said: ‘He woke me up and said we’ve arrived. I then said thank you, got out the car and had my handbag with me.

‘Because I had been drinking I was a bit disoriented, trying to get my bearings I was walking towards my house trying to find my keys.

‘He then came out and said “I will help”. I said “thank you but I’m fine”.

‘He followed me to my door. He then picked me up and carried me to the backseat.’

The woman said she was ‘confused’ and ‘bewildered’ when Durrani picked her up and didn’t shout out.

‘I don’t remember anything being said, I just remember being scared’, she said. ‘The next thing I remember is just lying there. He moved my playsuit to one side and started performing a sex act on me.’

Durrani then asked if she would perform a sex act on him and lowered his trousers to expose himself, the court heard.

The alleged victim said she ‘kept her mouth shut’ and tried to move her head to the side as he kissed her.

She said she managed to escape after he became distracted and looked out of the window, jurors heard

She said: ‘He backed off and that’s when I decided to put my playsuit back on. He got up looked outside the window as if to make sure that no-one was there.’

She reported him to police later the same day. The driver admitted during his police interview that he had sex with the woman but insisted it was consensual, jurors heard.

Durrani, of Streatham, southwest London, denies one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The trial continues.
