A Sydney man accused of killing his elderly parents is in a vulnerable position in custody and needs protection as he recovers from injuries sustained during the alleged attack, a court has been told.

David Reid, 46, held his heavily bandaged right arm aloft as he appeared via video link from custody at Sutherland Local Court on Monday, charged with murdering his mother Dianna Reid and father Victor Graham Reid last Tuesday.

His lawyer asked for orders that the alleged killer receive priority medical treatment in custody.

‘He’s currently on self-harm watch and he needs protection,’ barrister James Glissan told the court on Monday.

‘He’s in a very vulnerable position and needs care.’

Reid was arrested from his home on Tudar Rd in the south Sydney suburb of Bonnet Bay last Tuesday after he called police and allegedly threatened self-harm.

He led officers inside the house where they discovered his parents bodies.

Police said his parents died from ‘multiple injuries.’

The accused was taken to hospital with heavy injuries on his hand.

After his release from hospital he was taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with two counts of murder on Saturday.

He didn’t apply for bail and it was formally refused during a brief mention at a Parramatta court on Sunday.

Reid, who has worked for casino gaming manufacturer Konami for the past 20 years, has reportedly battled mental health issues in the past.

Concerns were raised last week when Reid showed up at work acting ‘more strange than usual’.

He had ‘a noticeable amount of blood’ on the back of his neck and shirt collar when he arrived at his Botany office on last Monday, a colleague told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The worker said no one wanted to ask him about the blood as his behaviour had changed.

However, Sutherland Superintendent Jason Box said police were not aware of any mental health issues.

Neighbours say Reid had been living with his parents his entire life.
