Lorry carrying mobile home crashes through M62 central reservation and hits car, killing driver

One person has died and another is in a critical condition after a lorry smashed through the M62’s central reservation and hit an oncoming car.

The car’s male driver was killed and a passenger left fighting for life after the accident in East Yorkshire.

A mobile home transporter heading westbound ploughed onto the eastbound carriageway, crashing into the car yesterday.

The lorry driver also suffered serious injuries in the collision but they are not life-threatening.

Drivers were trapped in their cars for more than 12 hours after the crash, which happened just before 10am on the Ouse Bridge, near Goole, closing the eastbound carriageway until 4.30am today.

Four fire engines, an ambulance and police rushed to the scene, with an air ambulance landing on the empty westbound carriageway shortly after.

Humberside Police officers said a ‘serious and complex investigation’ into the incident was underway.

A Humberside Police spokesman said last night: ‘We are currently working to open the westbound carriageway as soon as possible, the eastbound will however remain closed until further notice, possibly until the early hours of tomorrow.’

It is understood emergency teams have tried to reconstruct the scene of the crash as part of their enquiries.

Earlier on Tuesday, a police spokesman said: ‘We are currently in attendance at a serious road traffic collision on the M62 motorway between Junctions 36 and 37 near to Goole.

‘A lorry which was travelling westbound had gone through the central reservation and collided with an oncoming car which was travelling eastbound.

‘Both carriageways are closed while emergency crews are on the scene. They are expected to be closed for a significant amount of time throughout today.’

Drivers reported being stuck in traffic for more than 12 hours while emergency services attended the scene. Among them was a diabetic woman, and a family with a newborn.

The Ouse Bridge – which crosses the River Ouse near Goole – and the Humber Bridge provide the two main routes in and out of Hull.

The roads around the area in Howden and Goole were also left gridlocked as drivers tried to divert away from the M62.
