Lorry driver confronts traffic warden after she too parks on double yellow lines while issuing fine

‘Are you going to give yourself a ticket?’: Lorry driver confronts traffic warden after she too parks on double yellow lines while issuing fine

  • Driver from NR Evans distribution parked lorry on yellow lines – and drop kerb
  • He argued that she should have parked in nearby Tesco, and that ‘tacho’ rules which govern work breaks entitled him to stop ‘where necessary’
  • Traffic wardens can park in contravention of parking restrictions while performing their duty

This is the moment a frustrated lorry driver confronted a traffic warden after claiming that she too was illegally parked.

The footage shows the driver, from NR Evans distribution company, approaching the civil enforcement officer and asking her if she has just ticketed his lorry, which she confirms.

Pointing at his huge vehicle, which is also partially parked over a drop kerb in front of a path to a quiet main road, he asks her, ‘Why?’.

The warden replies: ‘Because you’re parked on double yellow lines and you’re blocking a drop kerb, Sir.’

The civil enforcement officer remains polite when the haulage driver asks her whether she is going to give herself a ticket. He also wants to know why she didn't park at a nearby Tesco

The haulage driver then beckons her, saying: ‘OK. Come here… come on. You say I’m on double yellows, right? [He points] Broken double yellows… So are you.

‘What gives you the right to park on double yellows and ticket all these vehicles? What’s the difference between you being on double yellows and these cars being on double yellows?

She replies: ‘I’m allowed to park in contravention when I’m issuing.’

And frustrating as it is for motorists who witness such things, she has a point.

Traffic wardens across the country are permitted to park in contravention of parking restrictions – for example, on double yellows – while carrying out their enforcement duties.

However, the driver remains defiant, and asks her why she didn’t park in the nearby Tesco car park.

Staying polite throughout the inquisition, which was posted on Facebook, she replies: ‘Well, I must admit I didn’t think about that. I do apologise. However, you are in contravention…’

The driver then reasons that 'tacho' rules entitle him to regular rest breaks and he has to 'park where necessary' - just like her while she does her job. Traffic wardens across the country are permitted to park in contravention of parking restrictions while doing their duty

The driver, also staying calm, says: ‘So are you. Are you going to give yourself a ticket?’

He then tries to reason that because she said she could park ‘where necessary’, he too should be allowed to park where necessary while carrying out his job, due to ‘tacho’ rules.

This is a reference to tachograph breaks which officially determine the intervals at which drivers of goods vehicles, or passenger-carrying vehicles, must take rest breaks.

The clip concludes with her giving him details of how to make a complaint if he wishes to dispute the ticket. It is not known where the footage was taken, although it is believed to be in the Peterborough area.
