This is the horrifying moment a lorry ploughs through a 44 car pile-up in thick fog injuring 22 people.

The articulated lorry driver bulldozed through a major highway in Abu Dhabi and has been slammed by the director general of Central Operations for putting lives at risk.

Abu Dhabi Police said the man drove recklessly, ignored severe weather conditions and caused a major accident on Tuesday at 8am.

During the footage of the incident loud bangs can be heard along with people shouting to each other before a lorry emerges and smashes into stationary cars.

One car flips into the air after the lorry slams into it but it is unclear whether anyone was in the vehicle at the time.

Brigadier Ali Al Dhaheri, director general of Central Operations said: ‘He caused harm to the health and safety of other people, damaged their personal possession.

‘The suspect was detained based on the offences committed by him and a case has been opened and will be presented to prosecution.’

Heavy vehicles are banned from that road between 6.30am and 9.00am and 3pm to 6pm.
