A Louisiana mother was charged with murder on Tuesday after she brought her dead five-year-old daughter to a hospital, telling doctors she had suffered injuries in a car accident.

Jasmine Anderson brought her young daughter Audrey Lynn Chelette, to Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital on July 17 where doctors pronounced her dead.

The 24-year-old mother told Alexandria Police Department sheriffs that the injuries were sustained in a car accident but when officers investigated they could not find evidence of the crash.

The hospital told police that Chelette was dead upon arrival and that Anderson told medics she had been in a single-vehicle crash and that ‘Chelette’s head and neck had struck the front passenger’s side window.’

‘The injury also did not seem consistent with what would occur during a crash,’ said a police statement.

However, an autopsy confirmed Audrey died of a neck injury, according to police.

After further investigation, Anderson was charged with second-degree murder in the death of her daughter, though no motive has been announced.

‘I want to thank all of our officers who worked so hard to investigate this case,’ said Chief Jerrod King after Anderson’s arrest.

‘The wrongful death of a child is a horrible thing to see, and these men and women have maintained their professionalism and pursued the case with their customary diligence.

‘I want to specifically commend Sergeant Butler and Corporal Daigre of our Traffic Division, who spent hours painstakingly recreating the suspect’s movements and discovering the location of the crime,’ Chief King continued, KSLA reports.

‘I also want to thank District Attorney Phillip Terrell, with whom we’ve been working on this case since the beginning to ensure a complete and thorough investigation.’

Anderson was arrested Tuesday and is being detained at the Rapides Parish Detention Center, where according to NBC , she has been booked at twice before

Audrey’s father, Christopher Dawayne Chelette, died at the age of 20 in 2016, according to a local obituary.

Chelette was not in a relationship with Anderson at the time and was engaged to another woman at the time of his death. A cause of death was not listed.

The pair’s other child, Christopher Dawayne Chelette Jr, died aged four in April, according to another obituary from Gallagher Funeral Home. Again no cause of death is listed.

Alexandria Police Department Cpl. Wade Bourgeois said: ‘Naturally, we are taking another look at our files from these deaths.

‘However, it would be premature to say we are reopening the cases,’ Bourgeois said.
