A loyal dog has remained at the spot where his master was killed in a car crash in Greece for 18 months.

Locals from nearby Nafpaktos have even built a makeshift home for the animal along with a shrine to his owner Haris.

Haris, who was aged 40 at the time of his death, was killed on November 9, 2017, when he was hit by a cement mixer, reports Nafpaktia News.

His faithful canine has stayed by the roadside ever since, although it is unclear how he got there in the first place as it is seven-and-a-half miles from his home.

Locals have tried to adopt him, but he always returns to the roadside, only moving to the shade in the bushes when it is hot outside

Kindhearted locals have tried to adopt the devastated dog, but he refuses to move from the area.

Even in blazing temperatures, he will only move over slightly to sit in the shade under some bushes.

Now people in the area leave him food and water, as well as a blanket to keep him warm.

Residents have dubbed him the ‘Greek Hachiko’ after the famous dog that waited for its owner at Tokyo’s Shibuya Station every day in the 1920s.

After its owner died in 1925, the dog continued to come to the station every day until his own death almost 10 years later.

The story became legend and a statue of Hachiko was erected in the dog’s memory in front of Shibuya Station, where every day hundreds of people have their photograph taken with it.
