‘I should be dead’: From missed flights to slowing down the car – the narrow escapes that allowed a lucky few to cheat death

Life can change in an instant – just ask international DJ Deadmau5.
The hit-maker, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, opened up earlier this year about how he and his tour manager missed boarding a connecting flight from Madrid by mere minutes in 2008.
The plane in question was Spanair JK5022, which crashed shortly after take-off killing 154 of its 172 passengers.

Monica opened the floor with a story about a fateful car accident she was in with three friends.
‘We were 17 and decided to sneak out of the house to watch the sun rise at Cronulla. As we’re driving we pass a sign that read ‘Dead Man’s Bridge’ so I slowed down and we had a bit of a laugh.

‘As I did a car came flying down our side of the road and landed on our bonnet. If I didn’t slow down all three of us would have died,’ she explained ominously.
Isaac recalled a time when he skipped class with a friend and they got onto a train.
‘I was leaning against the train door and as I moved away it opened out of nowhere. The train was going 70 km’s an hour… if I would have still been leaning on it I would have been dead.’
For Daniel it was a run-in with a loaded shotgun that almost spelled the end.

He was 19 years old when a friend held one high and it went off – narrowly missing contact. Interestingly no one had pulled the trigger.
Mia’s story was actually one involving her cousin and the tragic Sydney seaplane accident that happened on New Year’s Eve.
‘He proposed to his girlfriend and they were meant to fly back to Sydney together on that seaplane but missed it,’ she told the shocked hosts.
Instead a group of strangers on a yacht saw the proposal and invited them on board to enjoy a glass of champagne and toast to their love.
It ultimately saved their lives.
